The Statler Hotel is a franchise from its major entity, the Hilton Hotel. The Statler Hotel Dallas was originally built in 1956 and was the first major hotel to be built in Dallas. Currently, The Statler Hotel Dallas is in process of completely renovating their hotel, but want to preserve the original exterior look of the building. Hilton Hotels contracted with TriMark Construction of Dallas to oversee the renovation of the landmark project, and the general Contractor came to the experts at Dallas Digital Signs and Graphics to recreate and manufacture the all welded- Stainless steel channel letter signage for the project based of our renowned reputation for attention to detail in our work.
Since the Statler Hotel is an important franchise, it was important to make sure the channel letters were accurately reproductions of the original signage that was removed from the building in the 1980s when it was sold to another hotel operator. Unfortunately for Hilton, the drawings for the original signage were lost, and so Dallas Digital was tasked with re-creating the signage based on 1950's vintage black and white photos of the original building. We worked closely with the architects of the renovation project to make sure that the designs met all goals set, and once all approvals were received, we began construction of the letters.
The channel letters were fabricated from coils of 316 stainless steel. When creating channel letters for clients, we typically cut the letters into the anticipated shape using a CNC router which automatically follows the letter profiles with a rotating cutter, but because the lettering was to be fabricated from stainless steel, which is very difficult to machine, we hired Advanced Waterjet Cutting in Dallas to use their fiber laser to cut the lettering from the stainless steel.
One particular challenge was that the script "S" of the back-lit wall mounted signs needed to have a triangular cross section to satisfy design objectives, so we 3D modeled the letter in SolidWorks CAD/CAM and then used the software to extrapolate the two complicated strips that would become the sides of the letters. Once laser cut, the curved strips were then meticulously TIG welded together to create the perfectly formed Script letter.
